In a world where the likes of BP – claiming to be “Beyond Petroleum” but still wanting to continue deep sea drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, continues to cause anger by crass advertising campaigns claiming to be environmentally friendly, it is refreshing to come across a company that actually puts its money where its mouth is, which is exactly what one Italian building chemicals company is doing - €14 million in fact and that is just the bill for the environmentally friendly, ecologically sound research and development lab that will be opening next year.
This year Kerakoll rebranded as “the GreenBuilding Company” and has reformulated its products to be as environmentally friendly and safe to use for both the installer and the end user as they can be without affecting the product performance.  A process that the company says will continue as new innovations are developed and ingredients discovered.
At this point I have to own up to the fact that the UK branch of the company is a client of mine and so I could be accused of bias, but the evidence spoke for itself on a trip to the factory and training facilities last week, with a sneak preview of the new lab included.
And the principle still remains sound.  Practise what you preach and only claim to be or do something if you can back it up with the facts.  Any hypocrisy can and will be quickly exposed on the internet, as Nestle found to their detriment when Greenpeace attacked them over their policies on purchasing palm oil and packaging.  At first they tried to shut down any negative comment but they eventually capitulated and formed a relationship with The Forest Trust to help the company amend its purchasing practices.
Whether you can afford to spend millions of euros investing in what you believe in, or operate on a smaller scale, every one of the companies in our industry should be ensuring that what we say about our products and services is actually what we deliver.
