Mind your Ps
The CIM defines marketing as "the management process responsible for identifying, anticipating and satisfying customer requirements profitably."
To put it simply, most people have heard of the Ps, which define marketing at its most basic. There are at least 4 of them, but many people count up to 7.
To start with you have to find a Product which people need and a suitable Place in which to supply it to them. Then set a Price which they won't balk at and make sure it makes you a Profit (not one of the official ones, but probably the most important or you won't around for long) and once you have all that you can start Promoting it to let people know it exists.
The 3 others are more service industry orientated. There are the People involved who influence perception of the product and the Process of exchanging value, and finally the Physical evidence of the value of the product which includes the customer's experience when purchasing (how good the customer service was).
If you take into consideration all the above when writing your marketing strategy and review it regularly, you should be well on your way to success.
